Day 9    Sunday, December 21, 1997

Ensenada - Torresantos - Ensenada

Since we have to see the port captain tomorrow, we're only doing a short trip today.  We decide on the island of Torresantos.  The trip there takes an hour or two. The island itself is very small and I'm surprised to actually see a house on it. There are even a couple of people there. Man, that must be lonely. We guess that they might be fishermen that hang out there instead of having to do the journey back to Ensenada every day.

Although the weather started out fine, the clouds begin to gather as we reach the island.  By the time we're ready to return, the rain starts coming down. It's barely a drizzle at first, but soon it's pounding down. Poor Deborah who hasn't gotten her sea legs yet end up parking herself in the forward head with her own head forward as well.

We steer back by GPS in the foggy bay, and the return trip goes quickly. Soon, we're only a couple of miles away from the port... but where is it? In fact, we can't see any land at all. It's then that we realize that the GPS fix we've been heading towards isn't the port at all, but the middle of the bay that Ray set up several days earlier. Oops. Back on track again we find that we're still a couple of hours away from our destination. Poor Deborah, poor, poor Deborah.

A foggy return

When we come back, the whole harbor is swept in a white veil. We return to our slip and rest for a while.

This evening, we have an early dinner onboard with curry. I take a trip to the supermarket and buy some expensive tequila and dirt cheap 95% cane alcohol. Deborah, Andrew and I go looking for a place with salsa dancing, but without much success. After a brief reprieve and warm-up onboard during which we watch an old episode of Red Dwarf on video, we venture back out again and finally end up at Discoteque El Langoustin, which mostly plays Latin disco/rock. It wasn't quite what they were looking for, but Deb and Andy try a few steps together nevertheless. I mostly sit back and enjoy the scenery.
